REPLACEMENT WINDOWS - WHAT TO KNOW:
--U-Factor: The U-factor (also known as the "infiltration rating") measures the window's ability to reduce air leakage through the gaps between the sash and the frame. Most ratings note the air movement when the wind is blowing at 15 miles per hour. If you can hear the wind howling, whistling, or even whispering through your windows, it may be time to replace them.

--Low-E Glass: Low-E glass has a virtually invisible coating on the inside surface of the dual paned window that reflects the heat that is normally transmitted through a window, while still allowing the light to enter and pass through into the home. Often Low-E glass is combined with argon gas for even greater efficiency and energy savings. Compare and contrast the touch and feel of single paned and dual paned windows: the dual paned glass will be much closer to the ambient room temperature-that's a good sign that the glass is not acting as an energy conduit, sucking heat out of the room.
--Vinyl: Vinyl is a relatively light, non-conductive material that (i) enhances energy efficiency, (ii) repels moisture, (iii) withstands rust, corrosion and termites and (iv) is strong and durable. Forget vinyl's unfortunate connotation with cheesy 1960s synthetic materials-that association is as outdated as bell-bottom pants and love beads! Of course, vinyl is not for every product and use, but for today's windows, nothing is better.
